Empaths are people with open and inviting auras and deeply compassionate hearts. This results in empaths taking on the energetic weight of the world, feeling the emotional pain of others, being triggered by the worry and stress of others, and experiencing emotional exhaustion on the regular. How do you live a peaceful life as an empath when it feels like the world and the universe is constantly overwhelming you?

As a Spiritual Mentor and Intuitive Guide I work specifically with empaths, people pleasers and sensitive souls who desire to understand their energy and emotions so they can feel empowered rather than constantly exhausted.

In this blog I will share the number one tip for all empaths to live more peacefully. How do I know this will work for every single empath? Because I know the main problem every single empath experiences. 

The Main Problem of All Empaths

Every single empath feels and understands the emotions and energy of other people. This means the problem every single empath experiences is becoming emotionally affected or influenced by the energy and emotions in your environment. 

If your coworkers are sharing their frustrations, energetically you take on this frustration and it can trigger your own frustrations. 

If you witness a mother and child in the grocery store struggling, as it’s past the child's naptime and they are over-exhausted and the mother feels this exhaustion herself she may become annoyed that everything is more difficult with an exhausted child; you feel the energy of both mother and child. 

If you are at a family dinner and your opinionated uncle starts telling another family member how they are making the wrong choices in life, you feel the energy of judgment, shame and self-doubt that is being thrown around the table. 

This is your problem as an empath. 

You are feeling the energetic and emotional pain of everyone around you on top of your own emotions. This becomes extremely exhausting and eventually leads you to people pleasing burnout or an emotional breakdown. 

What is the #1 tip for every empath to live more peacefully?

Do the energy work and stay accountable in the process. 

What does this mean?

Let me share an example so you can understand what ‘energy work’ means. 

I had a client, let’s call her Sally, whose partner was an emergency first responder and Sally was a therapist. 

Sally was constantly open to the emotional pain of their clients and in the process had built a regular routine of protecting their energy before heading into a client call. 

Protecting your energy is a great practice for empaths and is part of the energy work. When you have a healthy practice of protecting your energy, you are placing an energetic shield around you so as to share compassion with others, without taking on their lower vibration energy (pain, fear, worry, anxiety etc.).

Now the problem Sally experienced is that every time they came home from work, they felt all the heavy energy their partner carried after a day of being an emergency first responder. Sally’s partner had also experienced a lot of childhood trauma which was unhealed and the partner was not ready to do their own healing work. This meant that after Sally had spent the day supporting their own clients, they often came home to an environment filled with emotional exhaustion, triggered past pain, and overwhelm. 

I had to work with Sally to teach them that it wasn’t their job to heal their partners emotional pain. It was time for Sally to focus on their own energy, staying in a grounded and protected state, cleansing their energy, and living in the high vibration they desired. This is the practice of doing the energy work. 

Sally then asked me, “when can I stop doing all that work?” My reply was simple, never

You are an empath. 

This means you are constantly taking on the emotion and energy of your surroundings. Whether you live with someone who has unhealed trauma, you work with people who are constantly negative, or you are running errands feeling the stress of complete strangers, you are always surrounded by different vibrations of energy. 

Your gift as an empath is your compassionate heart. 

Something you need to learn is how to transmute your own energy, which is the ability to alchemize the dark, heavy energy into light and uplifting energy. You have this ability, and it’s not as challenging as you may think.

Learning to do the energy work is the simple part. It’s exactly what I guide my clients through in the Spirit of the Empath 1:1 Mentoring program

The hard part is the second part of the #1 tip for all empaths to live peacefully. 

Staying accountable in the process. 

Energy work seems like another thing you have to do right now, but over time it will become second nature.  For your physical wellness you have to ensure you eat 3 meals a day (or whatever works best for your body type). For your emotional and energetic wellness you need to cleanse your energy, understand your emotions, and guide yourself with peace. This is a daily practice as well. 

What you NEED to know about your energy & emotions

It’s not the moon’s fault you are feeling drained.

It’s not mercury retrograde’s fault that you are experiencing problems.

It’s not your coworkers' complaints.

It’s not your family's judgment.

It’s not your spouse’s issues.

Stop blaming everything around you and start taking ownership over your own energy.

Every single time you blame someone else or something else, you are giving your power away and you are allowing external circumstances to control your experience. 

Your power is in your ability to lead yourself with peace. This doesn’t mean that you are in a peaceful state 24/7. This means through doing the energy work you are able to more quickly recognize when you’ve become affected by your environment. Then you can lead yourself through the simple strategies to cleanse your energy and align with your natural state of peace again. 

As an empath a life of peacefulness starts with your ability to do the energy work and at the same time keep yourself accountable in the process of living your life. 

Now that I have been practicing these techniques for a couple of years I can see a triggering situation before it even happens. I know which environments, people and circumstances tend to affect my energy most and I can successfully embody peace because I have a toolbox filled with strategies, practices and lessons that I’ve gathered. 

The most important thing for you to know is that your empathic abilities are a gift, you’ve simply never been taught how to guard your energy in a supportive way.
